Canal Lock on the Champlain Canal

We have been camping the past few days in Saratoga, NY. Yesterday when we went out to get stuff to make dinner we took an impromptu field-trip to a canal lock on the Champlain Canal. Here are some photos and a diagram showing how this type of canal lock works.

Empty.
This is very deep. About fifteen feet to the water level, and who knows how much after that.

Filling up.
The water goes through huge culverts with drop-gates to control the amount of water passing through.
The intakes are located right in front of lock gates.

Up to level and opening.
We were all surprised how fast the lock filled up. It took 5-6 minutes.

The mechanism to open and shut the gates.
It was fascinating to watch the different machinery operating.
